Liverpool have reportedly stepped up their interest in signing Benfica's Darwin Nunez this summer transfer window.

According to Portuguese outlet Record, as cited by Sport Witness, the Reds are 'determined' to sign the striker and have offered Benfica €100 million to complete the transfer.

The Uruguayan has already informed Benfica that 'he wants to play in the team led by Jurgen Klopp’ and that he is ‘fascinated by the atmosphere at Anfield’, as well as ‘being impressed with the way which the players interact at the club’.

Record also claim that Liverpool ‘intend to close the deal quickly to compensate for Sadio Mane's departure’, but also because ‘they know they are not alone in the race’ for the 22-year-old.

Anfield Watch Verdict

The Portuguese outlet aren't the ones reporting the aforementioned news. Some of Liverpool's most reliable journalists have come out and confirmed that the Reds are very interested in the Uruguayan.

Paul Joyce, as cited by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, has said that Liverpool have been told it will take a club-record fee of about £85 million to sign the Uruguay international from Benfica this summer.

The Liverpool reporter also said that Nunez is on Klopp’s wanted list this summer as he looks to reshape his attack in the likely event of Mane’s departure to Bayern Munich and the uncertainty over Mohamed Salah’s long-term future.

Other journalists such as David Maddock, James Pearce and Dominic King have all also confirmed the Reds' interest in the 22-year-old, but they all claim that the transfer fee is going to be a bit of a stumbling block as Benfica are keen on sticking to their price tag of €100 million.

Klopp has already spoken about Nunez after his Liverpool side faced Benfica in the Champions League last season.

"An extremely good looking boy eh?! He was calm for the finish. He is good, really good. If he stays healthy, he has a big career ahead of him," Klopp said, as cited by AW's Twitter account.
