'Who says we can't?' - Harvey Elliott defiant in title race after exciting Man Utd cameo

Harvey Elliott was again a bright spot for the Liverpool attack having been introduced from the bench during the Premier League draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. 

Elliott, 21, was on the pitch for only 21 minutes but made a decisive contribution for the Reds as they fought back from 2-1 down to draw 2-2 with the Red Devils. 

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was tempted into an unnecessary slide tackle inside the area as the England under-21 international embarked on a dribble, with matchday official Anthony Taylor calling for a penalty kick. 

It was dispatched by Mohamed Salah for his 14th goal in 15 games against United but still meant two points dropped for the Anfield side. Liverpool missed the chance to go top having allowed the hosts back into the game. 

Luis Diaz put Liverpool 1-0 up during a dominant first-half display but Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo got Erik ten Hag's side on top before Salah rescued the draw.

Elliott earned the plaudits for his cameo, aiming one shot on target and completing 22 of his 26 attempted passes. 

There are now calls to include the former Fulham man from the start in Liverpool’s upcoming league fixtures such has been his impact from the bench. 

His outstanding display was highlighted by the official club website following the game, and while grateful for the chance to demonstrate his quality, Elliott is not getting carried away. 

“It was OK,” was Elliott’s assessment of his performance. “I'm in the team to do that exactly and for me, if we don't win it means nothing. 

“I just need to keep going, keep trying to take these opportunities and work for the team, do my bit for the team and for the badge. I just want to keep going and keep fighting until the end of the season. As I said, if it's not three points then for me personally it means nothing.”

Liverpool face a crucial run of games with only seven matches left in the Premier League season and the race for the title hotting up. 

Arsenal lead the way by goal difference from Liverpool with Manchester City a further point back. 

Elliott: ‘Who says we can’t win it?’

There is much speculation concerning the various permutations of results in the coming weeks but Elliott has called on the Merseysiders to be “selfish” and concentrate only on what they can do for themselves. 

“We just need to be selfish with ourselves,” the midfielder said. 

“We can't be thinking about other teams and watching what they are doing and basing our games off them. 

“We need to keep being selfish and keep getting three points on the board. We are in the best possible position to do it, we've got unbelievable fans behind us that will be backing us in each and every game until the end of the season. 

“We have the team to do it, so who says we can't? We just need to keep going and keep taking it game by game, making sure we are recovered both physically and mentally and keep going. 

“It will be a tough finish but we just need to keep going.”
