It's clear that Slot favours the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones ahead of him in the pecking order.
But against Brentford, Elliott finally showed he can be relied upon and he still has value in this Liverpool team. Afterwards, he made an emotional vow about his status in the team that will need to be considered by Hughes and his recruitment team.
Harvey Elliott makes emotional Liverpool plea
Elliott came on for the final few minutes against Brentford with a lot to prove. Liverpool looked like they were going to drop crucial points in the Premier League title race.
Brentford's resolute defence had stood up to everything the Reds had thrown at them up until that point. But Elliott's presence was enough to unlock them.
The youngster played a key role setting up Darwin Nunez's first goal with a well-timed pass to Trent Alexander-Arnold cutting through Brentford's defence.
Then he turned the provider for Liverpool's second goal of the game to wrap up all three points for Liverpool.
After the game, Elliott spoke to reporters in the mixed zone as per the Liverpool ECHO and he revealed his utmost desire to stay at the club when questioned about reports linking him with a move away.
"Absolutely [I want to stay]. Liverpool is my club, Liverpool is my team," Elliott said.
"I want to fight for my place, fight for my position in the team. I am going to do what it takes. Do it as much as I can.
"Help the team out when it’s possible. It’s down to me to put in the effort, the hard work, the desire, to make that achievement. I am not going to give up, I am going to keep fighting and who knows what might happen."
That makes his stance very clear to Richard Hughes. It's a plea for Elliott who will be entering the last two years of his current deal at the club.
It means he could be heading towards a crossroad in his career in the summer. It's clear where his stance is but he needs to prove himself on the pitch more often to make sure he gets what he wants.
Otherwise, despite this plea, it's still a possibility Hughes will opt to sell him for profit. Such is the cut-throat nature of the game.
