Liverpool goalkeeper's NIGHTMARE season continues

Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation has been well established as problematic this season, despite their embarrassment of riches.

The awkward situation itself arose from the club’s decision to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia on a delayed transfer that will see him move to Merseyside for the start of the 2025/26 season.

That clearly indicated that Liverpool were set on letting Caoimhin Kelleher leave and moving on from Alisson sooner rather than later.

Subsequently, Mamardashvili has had the season from hell before he finally leaves Spain.

Valencia currently sit second-bottom of La Liga, having only secured 10 points from 14 games, including just two wins.

They have conceded 22 goals in the league - which should realistically see them higher in the table - but Mamardashvili’s post-shot expected goals minus goals allowed per-90, a metric tracking his ability to save chances he should save, currently sits at -0.08.

That puts him 20th out of all qualifying goalkeepers in La Liga this season, suggesting he should have done slightly better with the chances put at him.

But now his season has only got worse, as Valencia have announced that he suffered an injury to his right leg during their 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano at the weekend.

Mamardashvili completed the full 90 minutes but did have to undergo treatment on the pitch, with the club announcing it’s an injury to the right rectus femoris - a muscle connecting the hip to the knee in the right quadricep.

Although no official announcement has been made yet, it’s expected that the injury would keep the Georgian shot-stopper out until the new year at the very least.

It’s just another step in an awkward season in Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation.

With Alisson being back in the side against Girona, Arne Slot keeping his word about him always being the starter if he’s fit, Caoimhin Kelleher is relegated to a backup role despite performing sensationally over the past two months.

Mamardashvili’s addition creates more problems than it solves. And if this injury lingers or reoccurs then Liverpool will have a £30m white elephant on their hands.
