FSG are repeating terrible Mookie Betts ERROR with Trent Alexander-Arnold
If there are any Boston Red Sox fans who also support Liverpool they might be feeling a real sense of deja vu at the moment.
Liverpool are heading towards a potential contractual crisis with Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all heading towards running down their contracts at the end of the season.
While Salah and Van Dijk are equally important players, perhaps the most worrying player not to have signed an extension from the trio is Alexander-Arnold.
After all, he's a local hero who has come through the ranks at Liverpool and who is destined to be a future captain of the club.
The fact that Liverpool have gotten into this situation with almost six months left until his contract expires does not bode well for the Reds.
Especially when we delve deeper into FSG's track record.
What happened to Mookie Betts and FSG?
In February 2020, Liverpool were at the height of their powers. They had just won the Champions League and were on course to lift the Premier League title for the first time in 30 years.
But across the pond, FSG's other big franchise Boston Red Sox were living through very turbulent times.
The Red Sox seemed to be on an upward trajectory and had won the World Series in 2018.
Everything suddenly came crashing down though when in February 2020 they traded Mookie Betts to the LA Dodgers.
Like Alexander-Arnold, Betts was someone who had come through the system. The Boston Red Sox drafted him back in 2011 and he had become the club's biggest stars becoming an All Star in four consecutive seasons while playing in Boston.
Yet FSG were unable to come to an agreement to extend Betts' contract and he was thus subsequently traded in a decision that has recently been described as 'staggeringly stupid.'

It's easy to see why that is the case.
Since leaving the Red Sox, Betts has joined a dynasty in LA lining up with Japanese sensation Shohei Ohtani for the Dogers to create a formidable force in baseball.
Betts has won two World Series, became an All Star in his last four seasons and has also won the Silver Slugger Award four times.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox have failed to come even close to lifting the World Series and have struggled with the trade picks they brought in to replace Betts.
To put it succinctly, letting him go was a terrible error and it's one FSG now cannot afford to repeat at Liverpool.
Why Trent Alexander-Arnold will follow in the footsteps of Mookie Betts
Like Betts, Alexander-Arnold is a talent who was made in Liverpool. He's a fan favourite but he's also being attracted by the allure of joining a dynasty in Real Madrid alongside the likes of Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe.
Liverpool have to accept they cannot compete with the riches of Madrid.
But at the same time they must also recognise how valuable Alexander-Arnold is. They cannot simply allow him to leave on a free contract.
He is one of the best players in the world and at 26 years old he deserves a contract that will make him one of the highest paid players at the club.
Similarly to Betts, Alexander-Arnold is a unique talent in the footballing world. His creative ability makes him one of a kind and something that is worth an insane amount of money in today's market.
FSG dithered to give the contract Betts deserved back in 2020 and the LA Dodgers swooped in to prize him away.
Now, they cannot make the same mistake with Alexander-Arnold. If Real Madrid think he is worth the money then he is absolutely worth the money for Liverpool as well.
But if the club fail to recognise that we already know what will happen and how we will live to regret it. Just ask Boston Red Sox fans how they feel about Betts...
