Liverpool owners looking to SELL stake in team
Fenway Sports Group sold a $750 million stake to RedBird Capital Partners in March 2021. Redbird, a New York-based private investment company led by founder Gerry Cardinale, is now reported to be the third-largest partner in FSG.
Through its share of FSG, it is of course a part-owner of Liverpool FC alongside other major figures like LeBron James. Also in its investment portfolio is majority ownership of AC Milan and shares in the Alpine Formula 1 team as well as the Boston Red Sox through its FSG holdings.

Another sports team in the RedBird stable is the Rajasthan Royals of the hugely successful Indian Premier League. The IPL has grown to become the world’s richest cricket competition and RedBird owns 15% of the Royals after completing a $37.5m deal four years ago.

That valued the team at $250m and now comes a report from India which states RedBird is seeking to double its money by selling its share in the Royals. That’s according to the Economic Times, which also stated that neither RedBird nor the Royals would comment on the move.

The IPL is now valued at $16.4 billion, according to Houlihan Lokey - an investment bank - and cricket teams are priced high in the current market. That goes for the IPL as well as The Hundred - some of whose teams are owned by shareholders in Chelsea and Birmingham City.
The Rajasthan Royals have expanded their franchise to South Africa and the Caribbean with teams called the Paarl Royals and the Barbados Royals respectively. Other shareholders in the Royals include Emerging Media Ventures Ltd and Lachlan Murdoch - the CEO of Fox Corp.

Reports around FSG’s willingness to sell all or part of Liverpool have been in abundance over the last few years. The latest reports linked Telsa and X entrepreneur Elon Musk with a full takeover but it remains to be seen if John Henry and Co. ultimately sell up.
There is trouble at other FSG sports teams including the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL and the Red Sox. Both historic franchises are on long losing streaks and fans have grown weary of underperformance.
