Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have been making waves in the sports world for some time now.

Alongside owning the fourth most valuable football team in the world, they also own Major League Baseball’s (MLB) third most valuable franchise, as well as the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Pittsburgh Penguins.

And their tentacles in the sports world don’t stop there - just yesterday it was announced that part-owner Linda Henry has invested in Unrivaled, a new women’s three-on-three basketball league.

And part-investors in FSG, Arctos Sports Partners, bought a minority stake in the National Football League’s (NFL) Buffalo Bills.

Because of all of this, FSG are one of the foremost organisations in the sports world.

Liverpool are essential to FSG's status

And now, the Sports Business Journal has named FSG one of their ‘Most Influential’ groups in the sports world.

The article names John Henry (Liverpool’s principal owner), Tom Werner (Liverpool chairman), and Mike Gordon, FSG’s President.

“They won’t win a popularity contest in Boston, but Henry, Werner, Gordon and their leadership are involved in some of the biggest deals in sports.” Write the SBJ.

“Henry was instrumental in Strategic Sports Group’s $3 billion investment in the PGA Tour; Henry and Werner are in Commissioner Rob Manfred’s inner circle for MLB’s pivotal collective-bargaining agreement talks; they have a full plate with Liverpool, the Pittsburgh Penguins and RFK Racing; and they still have eyes on an NBA team and arena in Las Vegas.”

It paints a picture of Liverpool’s owners as the very serious players in the sports business world that we know them to be. And whilst America is their home, Liverpool are by far the jewel in their crown, being worth over $1bn more than the Red Sox.

So whilst they will always be heavily involved in the American scene, Liverpool’s success will always have to take priority for them.

We can’t imagine they’d be disliking what they’re seeing this season.
