Collaboration between Premier League owners is rarely advised outside of ownership meetings on rule changes and the like.

Particularly not between direct rivals at the top of the league like Liverpool and Chelsea have been for over 20 years now.

But Chelsea’s new owner Todd Boehly has proven that he doesn’t exactly play by football’s unwritten rules, whilst Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are planning multi-million dollar investments.

Also minority owner of Liverpool is basketball megastar LeBron James, who holds a 1% stake in FSG. And it’s not just a one way investment but a collaborative one.

In 2021, FSG became a minority investor in The SpringHill Company, an entertainment business founded by James and his longtime business manager, Maverick Carter.

Earlier in the month Anfield Watch reported that SpringHill had merged with British entertainment production company Fulwell 73. It is now reported that Chelsea owner Boehly himself is an investor in Fulwell 73.

As a result, that makes FSG and Boehly business partners, with an estimated £40m worth of investment in the merged organisation coming from its investors.

FSG's Liverpool and Chelsea go into business

It is being reported that a £450m film and TV studio complex is being built in Sunderland in light of the merger. Fulwell 73 were the organisation behind the popular Netflix series, Sunderland ‘Til I Die and, as Anfield Watch reported, The Class of ‘92.

“I don’t think there’s an independent production company anywhere in the world that can boast a group of financial partners quite as strong as this merger is going to have,” Fulwell 73 boss Leo Pearlman said to the Financial Times, “It’s a hell of a line-up of people who are coming into this new business.”

Whilst it is not as direct owners, a joint venture between the owners of Liverpool and Chelsea is sure to sit uncomfortably with fans.

Liverpool’s most recent matchup with Chelsea finished 2-1 to the Reds with Mo Salah scoring a penalty and Curtis Jones grabbing the winner.

And whilst the idea that the owners may be joking about it together after the game isn’t too welcome, anything that keeps Liverpool with a competitive advantage will be.
