Liverpool transfer news: Reds eyeing young Colombian defender

Liverpool are reportedly 'monitoring' young Colombian defender Kevin Mantilla of CA Talleres, according to one report.

The Reds' defensive injuries has seen them linked with a host of centre-backs ahead of the January transfer window, Mantilla the latest player touted with a move to Anfield.

Mantilla impressed with Colombia at the U20 World Cup earlier this year, making it to the quarter-final of the tournament with the South American nation.

Off the back of some stellar displays, the 20-year-old made the switch from Colombian outfit Independiente Santa Fe to Argentinian side Talleres in July, signing for a little under £1.5m.

Mantilla has made nine appearances for his new club since the summer, but is already being linked with some of Europe's elite clubs.

According to Ekrem Konur (via Colombia's version of AS), both Liverpool and Brighton are 'monitoring the situation' of the youngster, although the reliability of such a report is questionable.

If said report is to be believed, then Brighton would likely be a more realistic destination given they frequently sign young South American talents for low fees - Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister a prime example.

The Reds have generally steered clear of buying directly from South America in the past, instead locating young talents in Europe.

Liverpool are expected to move for a centre-back in the coming transfer windows - possibly as early as January - but will likely opt for a more experienced defender.

The likes of Goncalo Inacio and Antonio Silva of Sporting CP and Benfica respectively have been touted, with Joel Matip's season-ending injury perhaps bringing the club's transfer plans forward.
