Why latest Premier League fixture rescheduling is good news for Liverpool

Liverpool's penultimate Premier League game of the season has been rescheduled, with the Reds now taking on Aston Villa on 13 May.

The match at Villa Park, which will be Jurgen Klopp's last away fixture in charge of Liverpool, has been moved to the Monday night, 20:00 (BST) kickoff to be broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK.

The scheduling change to move the game on from the weekend will potentially give the Reds an all-important extra day of rest should they qualify for the Europa League semi-finals, with the second leg against either Benfica or Marseille set for Thursday 9 May.

With four days between the potential Europa League semi and trip to Villa Park, Liverpool then face Wolves at Anfield on Sunday, 19 May for the final day of the Premier League.

As the title race appears set to go to the wire, every marginal detail in the final weeks could make a difference for Klopp's side.

Meanwhile, Manchester City‘s trip to Tottenham has now been scheduled for Tuesday, 14 May meaning Pep Guardiola's side will play three times in a congested final week of the season.

That tricky clash for City is sandwiched between an away day at Fulham (11 May) and the visit of West Ham (19 May) on the final day.

Liverpool and Arsenal, by comparison, will play only twice in the final week.

Should they reach the Champions League semi finals, City will end up playing six matches in all competitions in the first three weeks of May up until the end of the Premier League season. Liverpool and Arsenal will only play five, if they progress in their European campaigns.

City have shown they in the recent past that they are perfectly capable of winning every game put in front of them and have the squad to deal with hectic scheduling. However, any minor advantage thrown Liverpool's way at this stage of the season can only be a good thing.

As things stand going into gameweek 32, Liverpool are behind Arsenal at the top only on goal difference, with both clubs sat on 71 points. City are a point behind on 70.

All three teams still have to play Champions League qualification-chasing Tottenham, who could be king-makers in this season's title race.

The Reds entertain Ange Postecoglou's side at home while the other two do so away.

Elsewhere, perhaps Liverpool's toughest remaining league game besides Spurs include the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park and trip to Villa Park.
