A player who has been consistently linked with Liverpool for years has found himself in hot water with the police after an incident in Germany.

Dutch centre-back Matthijs de Ligt was once one of Europe’s most promising young defenders, but since moving away from Ajax, first to Juventus and now Bayern Munich, he has struggled to rediscover the form he showed in his younger days.

Liverpool have long held interest in De Ligt from his time at Ajax and there was once a feeling that he would have made an ideal partner for Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the Reds’ defence.

However, large transfer sums requested by both Ajax and Juventus meant this was not to become a reality.

Indeed, this summer De Ligt is once again involved in a transfer saga, this time with Manchester United.

Unsurprisingly, Erik ten Hag wishes to sign the player he helped nurture at Ajax from Bayern this summer, although the German side are holding out for as large a fee as possible.

MATTHIJS DE LIGT WANTED BY POLICE

Unfortunately for De Ligt, he finds himself at the centre of another saga, as reports in Germany have emerged claiming he's wanted by the police in connection with a hit-and-run incident near Bayern’s training ground.

According to a report in German paper Bild, De Ligt is alleged to have rammed a parked car in his Audi Q8 before driving away, with a witness reporting this to the police.

Apparently, the police did not want to name De Ligt for data protection reasons, and neither Bayern nor De Ligt has commented on the alleged incident yet.

The report states that the police are currently examining the damage before taking any further action over the matter.
