Liverpool transfer news: Eddie Howe announces significant UPDATE on Anthony Gordon future
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has offered an update on the future of Liverpool transfer target Anthony Gordon as the new Premier League season draws closer.
Liverpool have been repeatedly linked with a move for the 23-year-old over the course of the summer window and were even briefly in discussions with Newcastle over a switch.
The Magpies needed to offload players prior to the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) deadline at the end of June and offered the Reds an opportunity to sign Gordon.

However, the deal involved Jarell Quansah heading in the other direction, something Liverpool refused to let happen. With his transfer fee too high for the Reds otherwise, a deal broke down.
Gordon has now returned to Newcastle after representing England at Euro 2024 and Howe has provided an update on his future at St James' Park.
EDDIE HOWE SPEAKS ON ANTHONY GORDON FUTURE
Speaking to the media prior to Newcastle's final pre-season friendlies, Howe claimed that Gordon remains committed to the Magpies despite speculation over his future.
"No distractions. He’s been really impressive [in training]. His focus has been on his work and his fitness, everything to do with this football club, nothing else," said Howe.
"I'm confident he is okay. We've had no conversations over the summer where it has been fractious or negative. He's always been the Anthony Gordon who has given absolutely everything to Newcastle. He's such an important player for us.
"We didn't want to lose anybody [this summer]. Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought really hard to make the right decisions in those last couple of weeks.
"The rules forced us to do things we didn't want to do. It was a really difficult time; there was a lot of uncertainty, and we didn't know what was going to happen.
"It was very, very difficult, but Anthony is an integral part of what we're doing. He needs a bit of a break. He's had a long season and the Euros will have been emotional for him as well. Hopefully, by the time he comes back, he's ready to go."
While Liverpool's pursuit of Gordon is by no means over, striking a deal looks increasingly complicated this summer, especially given Newcastle's price tag of £85m-£100m.
However, the former Everton man would be a welcome addition to Arne Slot's side - either now or in the future.
