Liverpool set to save £300k PER WEEK in wages and figure could rise
Liverpool will save a reported £300k per week after recent announcements. It’s a figure that could actually rise even further.
Liverpool announced ahead of their final game of the season that Joel Matip will depart this summer. Thiago, too, will leave the club now the campaign is over. Their contracts are coming to an end and won't be renewed.
It wasn't a shock, of course. Both have suffered terribly with injuries this season and with both also in their 30s, new contracts would have been a surprise.
And so they'll depart to new clubs - and that immediately saves Liverpool an awful lot of money.
Per Capology, Thiago is the third-highest earner at the club, behind only Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. He earns £200k per week, which is an extraordinary amount for a player Liverpool haven't been able to use this season.
Matip, too, isn't exactly on a pittance. He earns £100k-a-week wages but they will fall off the books as he leaves.
Liverpool could save more in wages
Of course, the pair likely won't be the only players leaving. Adrian is another who could well be off - he's now 37 and his contract is over.
The Spaniard earns £60k, which would actually mean that with just these three leaving, Liverpool could afford to pay another Salah (£350k per week).
Whether they choose to do that or not is another matter but the flexibility will be there for the club.
And all of this comes after the big one - swapping out Jurgen Klopp for Arne Slot. Reports suggest Liverpool will save around £8m per year in salary, such was the German's contract at the club.
Again, then, Liverpool will have that flexibility both with contract renewals and signings this summer. Salah, Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all entering the final years of their respective deals - the Reds will have the money there to meet demands.
