Liverpool FC News: Virgil van Dijk gives contract warning as Mo Salah has fans worried
Here's all your Liverpool news for Thursday December 26th.
Manager admits to DOUBTS over Federico Chiesa
Appearing as a guest on Domenica Sportiva, the former Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti first praised Chiesa, saying:
"He overcomes obstacles on his own, creates advantageous situations for the team, takes the ball, looks you in the eyes, goes beyond, and creates opportunities by himself."
However, he then admitted to doubts over Chiesa’s current physical condition. “But clearly, he needs to start playing with more consistency,” he said. “Whether he would have done better staying in Italy? I don't know. But perhaps now he'll gain experience that will help him grow further.
"In my opinion, he can help any team in any league, but from a physical impact perspective, we need to make progress. Even against France, we struggled somewhat with their physical presence and intensity of play. In this aspect, we need to make steps forward."
Virgil van Dijk gives Liverpool HUGE contract warning
One of the reasons why Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group might be concerned about offering new deals to Van Dijk and Salah is their age.
Although they are sill in incredible condition, Salah turns 33 next summer while Van Dijk will be 34 by the time next season kicks off.
As such, FSG may well feel they won’t have guarantees of consistent, long-term performances should they offer top dollar to player edging towards their mid-30s.
Van Dijk has sought to allay those concerns by suggesting in a recent interview that he is capable of playing on the highest level for another four years.
Liverpool can take those words as a warning because if they don’t tie him up for a long-term deal soon then another top European club could well come in and have the benefit of fielding, arguably, the best centre-back in the world.
“I love the club, the club loves me,” Van Dijk told Amazon Prime ahead of the Reds’ Boxing Day Premier League fixture against Leicester.
“I love the fans, the fans love me and it is a very good foundation to be successful. In my opinion I can play for another three, four years at least at the highest level. We will see what the future brings.”
Liverpool vs Leicester City: Postponement fears arise as match called-off
Liverpool took on Leicester City at 8pm tonight as the last game of the Premier League's Boxing Day schedule.
It's a game many have been looking forward to with Arne Slot's side sitting comfortably at the top of the Premier League table.
However, the game had been cast into doubt due to severe weather conditions around Merseyside.
The city and the surrounding area had been engulfed by a dense fog that has made visibility difficult.
Earlier today, Merseyside based League Two side Tranmere Rovers' 3pm game against Accrington Stanley was called off by the match officials due to the fog.
There were concerns the same could happen at Anfield if conditions did not improve. But in the end it all worked out.
