Virgil van Dijk could soon receive some incredible news over his new contract. The Liverpool captain's current deal expires in June.

As things stand, Virgil van Dijk is leaving Liverpool. The Dutchman's contract runs until June 30th and after that, he's free to do what he wants.

Van Dijk is actually able to agree a contract with any non-English club right now, in fact. It would be a pre-contract, allowing him to join them the moment his Anfield deal ends.

Liverpool, then, need to get him to sign a new one sometime soon. Technically, that could come after his current one expires but for everyone's sanity, we hope it's before then.

Van Dijk suggests it will come before then. He recently talked to Jamie Redknapp for Sky Sports where he gave a small update on contract talks.

“What will happen in the future, I have no idea, but I think in the next couple of months it will definitely be some information out," said the Liverpool captain.

Now, it's unclear whether that news will be positive or negative from a Liverpool point of view. Anfield Watch understands Van Dijk is expected to remain at Anfield, seeing as his agent broke off contact with other clubs in November.

So with that in mind, it appears incredible news is on the way.

Van Dijk's contract talks

The Telegraph reports that the 'received wisdom' is that Van Dijk will stay with Liverpool. They understand Mo Salah will do the same, though Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to depart.

Though there's an interesting line in there about Van Dijk. "Van Dijk may well become the best-paid centre-half in European football," writes Sam Wallace.

Now, as things stand, there is one centre-back paid more than Van Dijk in the Premier League. That's Jon Stones, who earns around £250k each week from Manchester City.

Van Dijk, in contrast, takes home £220k (these numbers are from Capology). So the suggestion here is that Liverpool could soon hand their captain a bit of a pay rise.

Should that happen, fans must prepare for a negative. Liverpool would only offer up that kind of cash on a short-term contract, given Van Dijk turns 33 this summer.

We'd hope there's at least two years on that deal, admittedly - but it could only be one. Though at this stage, we're just hoping Van Dijk isn't saying goodbye in May.

Two seasons would be great, one would still leave people happy. As for the money - you can't say it wouldn't be fully deserved.
