He'd put in a brilliant campaign at Hull City last season, establishing himself as a very exciting young midfield talent. The only question was whether he'd be playing at Liverpool or not.

The moment Liverpool moved for Martin Zubimendi in the summer, though, we had the answer. Morton would be moving on as the Reds found a different holding midfielder.

A deal with Bayer Leverkusen for around £20m was essentially sorted and Morton would be off to play for the Bundesliga champions. That's the kind of transfer his play warranted from 2023/24.

Only, Zubimendi pulled out of the Liverpool deal at the last minute. The club didn't have any alternatives, either, and decided to use Ryan Gravenberch as a holding player rather than sign anyone.

Morton, then, was needed as a backup option. The deal with Leverkusen was off and Liverpool kept their homegrown youngster until at least January.

The winter window rolled around but again, the Reds didn't have any new midfielders in mind. There was a hint, however, that Morton would be off.

Arne Slot didn't opt for the player against PSV Eindhoven with his heavily-rotated team. James McConnell took up the role - and it appears Slot is a fan.

He now wants McConnell in his first-team squad, which suggested Morton could leave.

Tyler Morton is stuck

The offers for Morton in January simply didn't arrive, however. There was one on deadline day as Middlesbrough attempted to grab him - but their £10m+ bid was rejected.

That, though, is a sign that things have gone wrong for Morton. Not only was his perceived value now around half of its peak during the summer, but the club bidding wasn't the Bundesliga champions.

It was a team battling for a Play-Off sport in the Championship.

Now, Liverpool rejecting the bid shows they still feel there's a lot more value in the player. But do other teams see that?

Perception is everything when it comes to transfer value and the rest of the football world appears to view Morton as a gamble. It's a far cry from the summer.

But Liverpool just haven't had a plan for him. Morton has barely played this season as what should have been a pivotal year for him goes to waste.

The hope, from his point of view, will be that clubs are more willing to splash out £20m and offer him a regular role come the summer. For now, though, his future is far murkier than it was this time last year.

He has every right to be furious with Liverpool not only sacrificing a year of his career but then rejecting a bid for him as they feel they can get more money. We're still rooting for Morton and hope he can get back on the same track as last summer.
