Liverpool FC news today: Amorim RELEASE CLAUSE, Arsenal JOKE & Coutinho REGEN
Here's your daily Liverpool news recap from Monday 28 October as the reaction poured in to Liverpool's 2-2 draw against Arsenal.
Slot realises Arsenal are a "joke"
Liverpool head coach Arne Slot claimed he had no concerns about Arsenal’s use of the so-called ‘dark arts’ in the buildup to the weekend’s Premier League clash at the Emirates.
Mikel Arteta’s Gunners are indeed developing a reputation as a ‘streetwise’ team, taking any opportunity they can to take advantage and slow the game down.
Reds legend Jamie Carragher meanwhile claims Arteta is morphing into Jose Mourinho before our eyes although the Portuguese has won far more in his managerial career than Arteta has.
It’s been very pronounced in games where they have gone down to 10 men - such as against Manchester City - but was also in evidence on Sunday.
Mamardashvili emotional at Ballon d'Or ceremony
One Liverpool player was clearly overjoyed to be in Paris for the Ballon d’Or ceremony, sharing the experience with his wife.
Summer signing for the Reds, Giorgi Mamardashvili, was spotted in Paris ahead of France Football’s Ballon d’Or ceremony. Nominated for the Lev Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper, Mamardashvili could scarcely hide his excitement, seen grinning from ear-to-ear.
He was spotted alongside his wife Elene Epitashvili, whom he married this past July shortly after his heroics at the Euros for Georgia, and just one month prior to agreeing terms to join Liverpool for next summer.
How Liverpool ruined Ten Hag and helped him get the sack
“If they don’t want me anymore then I will go somewhere else to win trophies, because that is what I have done my whole career," said Erik Ten Hag after winning the FA Cup with Manchester United back in May.
Well now he will get that chance, because this morning he was sacked by Manchester United.
The sacking came as no real surprise. Manchester United sit 14th in the Premier League. Only Crystal Palace and Southampton have scored fewer goals than them this season. They lost in the last minute again yesterday to West Ham. The wheels have come off.
And it would be fair to say that Liverpool gave one of the biggest helping hands possible to ensuring the continuing circus at Old Trafford.
Why Liverpool rejected Amorim
Ruben Amorim, who Liverpool shortlisted and then rejected in favour of Arne Slot has emerged as the frontrunner to replace the recently sacked Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.
Ten Hag received his firing following United’s surprise 2-1 defeat against West Ham, with the hierarchy at Old Trafford patently unimpressed following an even poorer start to the season than expected, with the Red Devils languishing in 14th domestically and having failed to win yet in the Europa League.
It has now been revealed that one of several managers that Liverpool considered before the hiring of Arne Slot is seen as favourite to take up position in the dugout at Old Trafford.
According to a report in The Athletic by David Ornstein, Sporting Lisbon manager Amorim is believed to be in contact with officials at United and open to accepting the move to United.
United to use Liverpool clause to hire Amorim
It's over. Liverpool will no longer be enjoying the Erik ten Hag era.
Instead, it seems like the club's rivals are on the brink of a new era with Ruben Amorim now targeted as United's next manager following the sacking of Ten Hag.
The Portuguese man will be a familiar name to Liverpool supporters. He was heavily linked with the Liverpool job as a potential successor to Jurgen Klopp, but in the end, the club rejected him as a candidate for these key reasons.
Arne Slot ultimately became Liverpool's top priority and the rest is history with the Dutchman having started life brilliantly as the club's new manager.
Amorim meanwhile has stayed put waiting for his big move which could now involve Man United using a clause made available to Liverpool as well.
Liverpool discover Coutinho regen in the academy
Philippe Coutinho leaving Liverpool has long been seen as one of the biggest ‘what if’s?’ in the club’s history.
The legendary front three of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino will forever be given credit for that time period, but for half a season they were a new ‘Fab Four’ hoping to light up the league in a way that hadn’t been seen on Merseyside for a long time.
Liverpool fans will, of course, recall Coutinho’s ability to find the back of the net from outrageous range. His technique of whipping the ball resulted in screamers that still find their way into ‘Best Premier League Goals Ever’ compilations.
One of the more underrated of Coutinho’s goals was against West Ham in the FA Cup in February 2016. Down 1-0, the Brazilian stunned Upton Park by rolling a free kick just outside the box underneath the wall to equalise.
And great news for Liverpool fans is that this exact goal has just been replicated by Ollie O’Connor for the under-18s.
Darwin to sell meat
Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has been handed the opportunity to be at the centre of a new, bizarre off-field campaign.
The Uruguayan forward has represented his country on the pitch on 31 occasions and has now been selected to represent his nation in a different sense, as the face of an Asian meat marketing campaign.
