But now he's trying to make a name for himself as a manager. It's a role that saw him start out coaching Liverpool's U18 side before leading Rangers to glory and unsuccessfully guiding Aston Villa in the Premier League.

His latest role in Saudi Arabia managing Al Ettifaq has also ended in disappointment with Gerrard fired after a poor start to the season.

Now though Gerrard is looking to make a comeback and in order to do that he could be set for a spectacular return in a move that no one really saw coming.

Steven Gerrard set to return to management with a surprise move

One of Gerrard's former club's, Rangers, have just fired their manager Philippe Clement after failing to guide Rangers back to the top of the Scottish Premiership.

This means the Belgian's role is now vacant at the club and according to a report from the Daily Record, Gerrard has emerged as the 'early favourite' to replace Clement.

Gerrard of course won the club's first Scottish Premiership title as manager in a decade during the 2020/21 season and fans will have fond memories of him.

It's a bit of a surprise to see Gerrard considered as the favourite as we don't often see managers coming back to their former clubs. If you'd have asked fans at the start of the season, nobody will have foreseen his return to Ibrox.

However, it's also a move that might make sense.

Rangers have not won the league title since, with Celtic asserting their hegemony. Gerrard is undoubtedly looking to get his managerial career back on track and a move to Rangers, where he is already adored could be the ideal role.

It's also a good test for the former Liverpool man coming up against his old manager Brendan Rodgers, who of course almost won the Premier League title with the Reds while Gerrard was captain.

Rodgers is now on course to win another league title with Celtic and Gerrard will be looking to once again end Rangers' rival's hegemony in Scotland.

It's still early stages and undoubtedly there will be other candidates but this seems like a move that's a no brainer for all parties involved.

Rangers get a manager back who knows the winning formula and who knows how to get the club back to the top.

Gerrard meanwhile comes back to a familiar environment where he doesn't need to prove himself right away because of his previous track record.
