Liverpool star WILL go to Euro 2024 9 months after 'wrong choice' left him in the cold

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch WILL go to Euro 2024, nine months after he looked to have cost himself a call-up.

The Netherlands announced their UEFA Euro 2024 squad on Wednesday, with Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo both making the cut as expected. However, there was also a Liverpool surprise.

Ryan Gravenberch will be going, too - nine months after he appeared to ruin his chances. The midfielder clashed with the Dutch Football Federation over an Under 21 call-up.

Gravenberch rejected the call, essentially, claiming he was better served settling in at Liverpool, who he joined that summer. It wasn't well received at all by senior Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman.

"I don't think it's a good decision, I told him that too," said Koeman, per Voetbal International. "I really don't like it."

Michael Reizinger, the U21s boss, echoed that sentiment.

"For a national team, for your country, you have to play with your heart, not with your head,"he said. "So you really have to want to be there. That's just important to me.

"He made his decision, to stay in Liverpool to acclimatize anyway. I know Ryan, he's a good and sympathetic boy, but here he made the wrong choice."

In some ways, it's surprising. Gravenberch hasn't really had the best season for Liverpool - plenty of ups and downs, with injuries robbing him of consistency.

He only started 12 Premier League games, in fact. And if you total all of his league minutes, you only end up with the equivalent of 12.5 full matches.

So you wouldn't think it's enough for the KNVB to welcome back a player who frustrated them and hasn't featured at international level in nine months. Yet, here we are.

And perhaps that's just a sign of Gravenberch's natural ability. He's got so, so much of it and they've clearly decided that the 22-year-old can't be left out - the Netherlands are a better squad with him in it.

Hopefully, that translates to opportunities at the Euros as they could be a massive confidence boost for Gravenberch heading into the new season.
