Liverpool now PUBLICLY searching someone to fill vital club role

Liverpool have begun a public search for someone to fill a key role at the club. It’s not one that will come easily, however.

Liverpool Director of Research William Spearman posted a job advert this week. The club are now looking for a lead data scientist - Spearman's old role.

He held that position for quite some time, joining the club in March 2018 and remaining in that role until February 2023. He was then promoted to his current position.

And now it's time to find his successor, essentially. It's not a job you just walk into, however, and Liverpool are after the best of the best.

They want someone with a Master's or PhD in a STEM subject, as well as five years of work in data science AND previous work in football analytics.

They're the requirements Spearman himself met back in 2018. He holds a PhD in Physics, having graduated from Harvard. The American also held a student role at CERN, working around the Higgs boson.

After that, Spearman worked at Hudl as a senior data scientist. A successful paper on the physics-based modelling of pass probabilities in football got attention and eventually saw him hired by Liverpool.

In other words, the standards here are incredibly high - but maybe you meet them!

Liverpool on the search

The Reds have had to search for an incredible amount of people this summer. Jurgen Klopp wasn't the only one to leave, after all - the majority of the coaching staff followed him out of the door.

Liverpool also needed a new sporting director anyway, while FSG's multi-club plans meant they created a bunch of new roles within their company. Put it all together and we've seen the Reds hunting for new names for months now.

And naturally, they're only after the best of the best for every position.
