The Reds were so dominant in the league phase that it was obvious they'd qualify for some time. In fact, it was fairly quickly apparent they'd top the league.

Their 'reward' for that was a meeting with one of Europe's most in-form teams. Paris Saint-Germain have been relentless of late, powered by the remarkable form of Ousmane Dembele.

Just this weekend they smashed Lille 4-1 in Ligue 1 - and that's another team in the UEFA Champions League last 16. Liverpool are going to face a challenge here and arguably the biggest they've faced all season.

Which is why they needed some positive news on Tuesday. Fortunately, they got it.

Cody Gakpo in the Liverpool squad vs PSG

Cody Gakpo has travelled to Paris for this one. It's a surprise, given the Dutchman missed training on Tuesday.

After that was noticed, no one really expected him to travel with the squad. Instead, there's a solid chance that Gakpo faces PSG.

Slot explained the situation in a press conference on Tuesday, making it clear that Gakpo may miss the game but he's in contention.

"He was close to being ready to play again but he felt a bit of pain after blocking a shot in training," said Slot. "We brought him with us and will make a decision tomorrow on if he can be involved.

"It will be a close call."

We're hoping this is a bit of gamesmanship and that Gakpo is fitter for this one than Slot is letting on. It helps Liverpool if PSG don't entirely know who they're going to face, after all.

But it's also possible that the Reds will be without one of the most important players this season. If that is the case, an already difficult clash just got a little bit more so.
