Liverpool pulled off one of the best smash-and-grab victories the Champions League has ever seen on Wednesday night.

Harvey Elliott rescued the Reds with his first touch of the game, breaking the deadlock and giving Arne Slot’s side a one-goal advantage to bring back to Anfield.

Alisson put in one of the greatest performances of his career, keeping his third successive clean sheet and rightfully claiming Man of the Match.

For Liverpool’s usually lethal forwards it was a night to forget. The starting front three of Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz had a combined one shot between them – which failed to hit the target.

Blunt Diaz fails to impress in Paris

Diaz had an opportunity to prove why he should remain in the starting XI upon the return of Cody Gakpo. After producing an assist against Newcastle in his previous match, a good performance on Wednesday could have seen him nail down a starting spot.

The Colombian did not seize the opportunity however and once again struggled.

Rated 4/10 by The Express, the 28-year-old only completed 75% of his passes, failed to create a single chance and completed less than half of his duels on the ground.

The Reds struggled going forward as a unit but at no point did Diaz look like creating anything, and a sloppy square pass gave away possession and almost gifted PSG a goal.

It was no surprise to see the Colombian hooked when the changes came, and it’s safe to assume Gakpo will return straight to the starting XI when fit.

Diaz’s future at Anfield

This summer is set to be one of change at Anfield. An overhaul is coming and, as Anfield Watch exclusively revealed, a number of big name players – including Diaz – could depart before additions are made.

Barcelona have been courting Diaz for close to a year now and, with no new contract on the horizon unless he can improve his on-pitch performance, a sale looks increasingly likely.

Liverpool supporters will hope for a better performance against PSG in the second leg, even if Slot’s side were able to get the result on Wednesday.
