One of Liverpool's minority owners LeBron James had enjoyed a brilliant night in the MSG Arena beating the New York Knicks 128-114 and scoring 33 points.

It is expected to be his only game in the historic Maddison Square Garden arena of the 2025 regular basketball season. So, you'd think this would have been the highlight of his night - being able to silence the often raucous New York home crowd.

But, no, the Liverpool stakeholder's excellent night only just began as late in the evening news broke of a seismic deal in the sport involving LeBron himself.

Ex-Real Madrid star set to team up with LeBron James

In what is one of the biggest trades in NBA history, news broke on Saturday night that the wonderboy Luke Doncic is set to be traded to the LA Lakers from the Dallas Mavericks.

The Mavericks will receive Anthony Davies and Max Christie as well as and a 2029 first round pick.

The news brought shockwaves to the basketball community. At 25 years old Doncic is regarded as a generational player who became a legend at Real Madrid winning the EuroLeague and the MVP award as a teenager before he became a 5-time NBA all star and led the Mavericks to an NBA Championship finals last year.

Doncic ultimately lost to the Bolton Celtics but still put in an amazing showing and has continued to post up incredible numbers since.

Regarded as one of the best NBA players, a player like Doncic is usually untradable so that the Mavericks were open to this trade is remarkable in itself.

The move is simply unprecedented. Very rarely have there been such a duo assembled in the history of the game. Perhaps the last time two players of such calibre were in the same NBA team was when Kobe Bryant teamed up with Shaquille O'Neal incidentally for the Lakers as well.

This is a trade that will change franchise history for the LA Lakers again. With Doncic and LeBron, the Lakers become title contenders and it's a link-up that could prove to be as iconic as Shaq and Kobe in years to come.

LeBron seemed to be on his last legs and there has been uncertainty whether he would carry on beyond the current season but Doncic's arrival should revitalise him to continue.

The Liverpool owner will be thrilled with this deal.
