Jurgen Klopp admits to REJECTING Liverpool proposal
Jurgen Klopp's time at Liverpool is coming to an end but the 56-year-old has now revealed that he previously rejected an offer from the Reds.
The Liverpool boss will take charge of his final match this Sunday against Wolves at Anfield in what promises to be an incredibly emotional occasion.
It's not just Klopp saying goodbye to Liverpool supporters either, with the likes of Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara and Pep Lijnders among the many departing Merseyside at the end of the season.
Klopp has been showing his appreciation for supporters and the club throughout his final week, while also reminiscing about some of his greatest moments in the dugout.
However, the much-loved Liverpool manager has now revealed that he once rejected an approach from the Reds while managing at Borussia Dortmund in 2012.
JURGEN KLOPP REJECTS LIVERPOOL OFFER
Speaking with The Telegraph, Klopp revealed that Liverpool offered him a job several years before his arrival in October 2015, but he was not remotely interested in the position.
Recalling the proposal, Klopp said: "Liverpool? Nah, no chance. Three years before I came here, Ian Ayre [former LFC chief executive] called me up when I was at Dortmund and asked if I was interested.
"At that moment I thought, ‘eh?’ Dortmund were flying and maybe playing for the Champions again.
"Liverpool was not in a great place. It was not a place you go and say ‘yeah Liverpool is calling, yeah come on let’s go’."
However, Klopp admitted that when the opportunity came around again three years later, he couldn't wait to accept a second approach.
"It changed three years later. For me it was No 1 choice, for whatever reason. It’s not really explainable. I just thought that is the one I want to have," said Klopp.
While perhaps not exactly what fans wanted to hear, it's hardly surprising that Klopp felt this way at the time given the trajectories of Liverpool and Dortmund.
The Reds were in a difficult place at the start of the 2010s with some of the club's lowest moments coming during that era, but thankfully Klopp said yes at the second time of asking.
