How Jurgen Klopp responded to AWFUL David Coote decisions against Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp has had a few run-ins with David Coote over the years. Here's how the former Liverpool boss reacted.
Premier League referee David Coote was suspended after a video leaked that appeared to show Coote disparaging Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp. Now, this is all alleged - the referee claims it is not him in the video.
The Mirror's Darren Lewis claims Coote is adamant that the video is a fake. The Premier League are having tech experts look into that.
EXCLUSIVE: The MASSIVE cost of Liverpool transfer DOOMSDAY revealed
The video shows a man who looks a lot like Coote labelling Liverpool 's***' and Klopp a 'c***'. Another man in the video says 'we hate Scousers'.
All in all, there's a big investigation into the video underway. So we'll make it clear once more - this could all be fake.
What certainly is true is that Klopp has had plenty of run-ins with Coote over the years. Here's what he's had to say about the referee.
Jurgen Klopp on David Coote
There have been plenty of incidents involving Coote and Liverpool. Plenty that are truly shocking, quite honestly.
Everton vs Liverpool
The first came against Everton at Goodison Park back in 2020. Jordan Pickford's 'tackle' on Virgil van Dijk destroyed the Dutchman's knee, leaving him out for close to a year.
Coote, who was on VAR, did nothing. It's safe to say Klopp wasn't happy after the match.
"First, the ref doesn't see it, so it is Michael Oliver who doesn't see it and he is an excellent referee usually, but why he couldn't see it I don't understand as he had the best view," he said, per the Mirror.
"And the VAR forgets the rules! As a human being, it is all about that, it is not that I want the Everton players punished. But I think it is something we all agree on. If you do something wrong you have to deal with the consequences. And at this moment, it is only one person (Van Dijk) who deals with the consequences."
Liverpool vs Arsenal
Last season, Klopp lost it after he failed to give a handball against Martin Odegaard in Arsenal's box. It is one of the more blatant handballs you'll ever see, really, but Coote, once again on VAR, gave nothing.
"Yes I have seen it," Klopp said, per ESPN. "I am pretty sure someone will come to explain it to me why it was not a handball but I don't know how?
"I don't say that the ref can see it because I don't know where he was in that moment.
"But how can a guy in an office see that and not come to the conclusion that maybe, possibly it could be worth the referee having another look?"
Liverpool vs Burnley
There was also the time in 2020 when Liverpool hosted Burnley. The Reds were furious over Coote in this one - a fixture that happened a couple of months before the Van Dijk injury.
Andy Robertson had a foul-mouthed tirade against Coote at the end, with Klopp alongside him. The latter then spoke about him after the game.
"We didn't close the game and they took their moment," Klopp told BBC Sport. "It feels like we lost a game, we have to look after the game better.
"We were angry with the referee but we have to criticise ourselves first for not finishing the game."
Admittedly, a lot of the 'spicier' comments from Klopp to Coote weren't made in public. But there is a history here - and a history of Klopp claiming the referee had given a terrible decision against Liverpool.
And honestly, he's right.
