Jordan Henderson could be forced out of Ajax despite only joining in January as a result of the club's financial difficulties.

The former Liverpool captain joined the Dutch giants last winter, eventually bringing his nightmare spell at Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq to an end.

Henderson hasn't been universally popular in the Netherlands, with Ajax unable to turn their fortunes around after a dismal start to the season. They're currently fifth in the Eredivisie - a whopping 35 points off champions PSV Eindhoven and 26 from Arne Slot's Feyenoord.

The 33-year-old has started just seven matches in the league since his move and he could already be heading out of the door this summer.

JORDAN HENDERSON COULD MAKE AJAX EXIT

According to David Ornstein, Henderson's future in Amsterdam is in jeopardy due to the club's financial situation.

Ajax have missed out on huge sums of money by not qualifying for the Champions League next season, meaning they may have to axe some of their highest paid players.

Ajax can still make the Europa League next season should they finish in fifth, but they would have to go through qualification to reach the group stage of the competition.

That places Henderson in a difficult situation, with Ajax potentially forced to cash in on the England international to free up funds.

Henderson doesn't want to leave Ajax and they don't want to part ways with their winter recruit, but they may be forced into making an unwanted decision in the coming months.

According to Capology, Henderson earns more than any other player in the Eredivisie, taking home €90,000 (£77,388) per week.

The Eredivisie side may also have to cash in on their other highest earners and star players, including former Tottenham forward Steven Bergwijn.

Henderson has endured a difficult year following his Anfield exit and things look like they may be about to get worse for the Premier League and Champions League winner.
