Jamie Carragher expresses his 'FEAR' about Arne Slot's Liverpool plans
Jamie Carragher admits he has a ‘fear’ about Liverpool’s midfield under Arne Slot. The Reds legend isn’t sure it’ll be fixed, either.
Jamie Carragher talked to The Overlap this week and the subject of Liverpool's midfield came up. The Reds, of course, are looking for a new midfielder and appear to have found one in Martin Zubimendi.
New reports claim they'll pay the £51m release clause in Zubimendi's contract to get it done. The player also reportedly wants the move - so things could happen quickly here.

But is this a transfer that will ease Carragher's concerns? Probably not. Here's what he had to say.
“I think the interesting thing is that when you look at Arne Slot play it looks a bit more technical than Jurgen Klopp," said Carragher.
“He’s a Dutch coach and when you think about what Jurgen did in that position he brought Fabinho in. I’m not sure Arne Slot is going to bring that type of footballer in.
“I think he wants someone who can get on the ball and play. I thought Mac Allister did that role a lot for Liverpool last season.
“Liverpool definitely lack legs and energy in midfield. If you think about how they finished last season it was Mac Allister, Endo and Harvey Elliott as the midfield three.
“All got great strengths but none of them can run. When I look at that position, I say it’s a fear, I don’t know if Liverpool will bring any in, but if it’s a total footballer will he be too similar to Mac Allister last season, and you lacked that physical presence, that energy to protect the back four.”
Liverpool's midfield under Arne Slot
We see where Carragher is coming from here - he wants an athlete in midfield. Someone who can get about the pitch and be a true physical presence in the way that Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Gini Wijnaldum were.
Liverpool don't really have that and Zubimendi isn't going to 'fix' that, either. In fact, the squad's best hope of 'finding' that player is for Stefan Bajcetic to develop into the player his potential suggests he can be.
If that happens, then Liverpool have that presence in the middle.
But it's also important to remember that Slot will try and do things differently. In fact, he'll try to do things differently to literally every Liverpool manager before him - they all had a player who wanted that battle. Of course, it was Steven Gerrard for the longest time.
Slot wants to ignore that kind of battle and instead focus on keeping the ball and playing a more positional game. If it works, then Carragher's fears are unfounded.
If it doesn't, then this won't be the last we hear about this.
