Slot’s side have scored the most goals in the league this season, conceded the second least and boast a goal difference 10 better than any other side.

The side have been more than deserving of their place in the league, and supporters will hope that they can maintain this level heading into next season.

Despite Liverpool’s outstanding season, there is one major metric in which they rank in the bottom five teams, and it needs to be addressed.

Liverpool’s woeful set-piece record

This season the Reds have scored from a set-piece only six times. Only Fulham, Southampton and Leicester have scored less, and Ipswich also sit on six.

The issue once again proved a problem when the Reds took on Leicester on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool took 13 corners against the Foxes and the majority of them caused the now-relegated side no real issue.

Leicester don’t have a particularly stellar record defending set-pieces this term either, having conceded the joint-seventh most in the division.

Slot’s side were able to emerge 1-0 victors thanks to a goal from substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold which did actually come from a corner, but their overall lack of threat from set-pieces could have cost them.

Slot’s view on Liverpool’s set-piece problem

Set-pieces do seem to be one of the Reds’ only weaknesses, but this is a problem the head coach is aware of.

“We need to improve on set-pieces,” Slot told Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports’ YouTube channel. “You need a positive set-piece balance, or at least a neutral one. If you lose the battle on set-pieces it is hardly possible to win a game of football.”

Slot also admitted that set-pieces are something that Liverpool have worked on specifically in training, but the team are still searching for improvement in that department.

“The good thing for us is defensively we do well, but offensively a team like us that has so many set-pieces has to score more,” Slot admitted.

What is the solution for Liverpool?

While work on the training ground may eventually yield results, there are other actions that the Reds can take to improve their record quickly.

Moves have already been made to try and change things, Alexis Mac Allister taking corners for example, but opportunities could be given to other players in the squad if set-piece statistics don’t improve.

Dominik Szoboszlai took corners for his previous side, RB Leipzig, and allowing the Hungarian license to take set-pieces for Liverpool could be the logical next step for Slot.

Andy Robertson and Alexander-Arnold have been Liverpool’s main set-piece takers for a long time now, but both players have been in and out of the side for various reasons this season, and there is no guarantee that either fullback will be at the club beyond this season so succession planning in the set-piece department might not be a bad idea.

Liverpool have been successful despite their issues with set-pieces, but mastering this skill could make the side even stronger and would certainly help Slot’s side compete on all fronts next season.
