Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have been a contentious topic of discussion among supporters for some time.

Despite delivering almost every trophy available and expanding the capacity of the Anfield Stadium, FSG are often criticised for their actions, or lack of, in the transfer market.

FSG are not just the owners of Liverpool, they boast a vast and diverse portfolio of professional teams from a variety of sports, and the criticism they are receiving from supporters of one of their other teams – the Boston Red Sox – will resonate with many of the Anfield faithful.

It appears it isn’t just Liverpool supporters that have been frustrated by John Henry and FSG.

FSG’s problem in Boston

As well as it being the transfer window for Liverpool, there are also players on the move in Major League Baseball.

The Red Sox were reportedly deep in negotiations for Juan Soto, the 26-year-old outfielder who signed for the New York Mets in one of the most lucrative sports contracts in history in December.

The Boston based team missed out on Soto however, and they haven’t made up for it since in the eyes of many.

A report in the Boston Sports Journal details the Red Sox offseason noting that, although there have been some good additions, they are still at least one signing away from a “B” grade offseason.

The report names one target who would be ideal for the Red Sox, Alex Bregman, but criticised the “unserious” way FSG are approaching his signing.

“Instead of pushing full (or even half) throttle ahead with a chance to add a game-changing talent [Bregman], Boston’s front office is reportedly content to sit back and leave it all to chance.”

“Weak and pathetic” FSG heavily criticised

The report also quotes baseball insider Ken Rosenthal speaking on the ‘Foul Territory’ podcast who tells that FSG are taking a passive approach to signing Bregman, essentially waiting to see if other teams (Toronto & Detroit) don't sign him rather than actively pursuing him.

This approach is then labelled as “weak and pathetic” by the report, especially because they were reportedly willing to spend considerably more on Soto only two months ago.

This approach is strikingly similar to the tactics FSG have employed at times with Liverpool, notably in the pursuits of Jude Bellingham and more recently Kvicha Kvaratskhelia.

It’s what Coolbaugh, the author of the Boston Sports Journal article, says next that really mirrors FSG at Liverpool.

Coolbaugh acknowledges that Bregman isn’t on the same level as Soto and hasn’t ever been the best player in the sport but also urges that he suits the Red Sox on multiple fronts.

FSG making the same mistakes in Boston as in Liverpool

Supporters of the Reds have heard it time and time again.

Liverpool miss out on a ‘world class’ talent (Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe, Moises Caicedo, Aurelien Tchouameni) and then no alternative is brought in.

The same happened again last summer when the Reds missed out on their top target, Martin Zubimendi, and no alternative was signed.

This seems to be the approach that FSG are now applying over the pond, having missed out on Soto they now refuse to make a proactive and ambitious attempt to recruit an alternative.

This doesn’t bode well for Liverpool and shows that FSG haven’t learned from their mistakes.

A bad omen for Liverpool approaching summer 2025

In less than six months the Reds are set to lose their three best players Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold for free when their contracts expire.

The fallout if all three stars leave could be catastrophic, and FSG alongside Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will have to be ruthless and aggressive in the transfer market to minimise the damage.

FSG’s track record at Liverpool, and their “weak and pathetic” approach in Boston this offseason don’t bode well for a full rebuild next summer, especially if all three depart for no money at all.

The Anfield faithful will hope that if the unthinkable does happen, and all three stars leave on free transfers, that FSG will provide the funds for Edwards and Hughes to rebuild the team properly, otherwise they are effectively leaving Arne Slot high and dry.
