Arne Slot has reportedly been impressed by one 21-year-old at Liverpool this summer. Is it enough to keep him at the club?

The Times reports that Fabio Carvalho has impressed Arne Slot in preseason as clubs line up to sign him from Liverpool. The Portuguese playmaker has been something of a forgotten man at Anfield for the last 18 months.

Carvalho arrived with a lot of hype on the back of a brilliant promotion season with Fulham. Liverpool moved to sign him - even waited for him - and his debut season started brightly.

The Reds fell apart that season, however, and Jurgen Klopp opted to leave the relatively untested youngster on the sidelines as a result. A loan then happened a year ago but it was a disaster - Carvalho had under 180 Bundesliga minutes in six months with RB Leipzig.

He saved his season at Hull City post-December but it did mean dropping down into the Championship again. Carvalho remains pretty untested at the top level.

But he has impressed Slot with his efforts so far - a couple of preseason goals certainly helped in that regard. Is that enough to earn a place in the first-team squad next season, though?

Fabio Carvalho's future

Liverpool rejected an offer just last week for Carvalho. Southampton apparently put £15m on the table but the Reds didn't deem that to be acceptable.

What is acceptable? That's not clear and it's entirely possible that Liverpool decide not to sell. Slot will have the final decision on that - if he wants Carvalho in his squad, he stays.

After all, a year of proper football in Liverpool's first-team squad would see the 21-year-old's value fly far beyond £15m. There's potential for it to climb incredibly high.

But that can only happen if there's room for him. Right now, that's up for debate, so we'll see just how impressed Arne Slot was.
