Liverpool FC News: Donald Trump tipped to seal FSG's $1bn Saudi deal
Liverpool owners FSG have been locked in talks with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund over the last few months. Now Donald Trump has been tipped to get things over the line.
Saudi Arabia enjoys investing in sport, as you’ve noticed. There’s all kind of money pumped into football - with Liverpool certainly running into it plenty of the last few years.
But it’s far from the only sport they’re involved in. Golf is a major one, with LIV Golf set up as a rival to the PGA Tour - and a rich one at that.

Golf’s divide end, however, if talks over an investment from the Public Investment Fund work out. That investment would be for around $1bn but it’s run into problems.
The US are very picky when it comes to dealings with Saudi Arabia. At least, they are when it comes to investment in sport. They’re decidedly less picky in certain other areas.
The reason is simple - the PiF is essentially the ruling entity of Saudi Arabia. This would be another country buying control over an iconic American enterprise. As a result, it’s been difficult to find a way for any investment by the PiF to get signed off on legally.
Donald Trump tipped to help FSG
So what’s this got to do with Liverpool? Well, Fenway Sports Group own a chunk of the PGA, having led a group that pumped in $3bn of investment earlier this year.
Now John Henry is in the group negotiating with the PiF. He’s seen the standstill first hand - but recent events in the USA could fix things.
Golfer Rory McIlroy believes Donald Trump is here to rescue proceedings. He’s pointed out a ‘great relationship’ between Trump and the Saudis, feeling that it should help things get over the line.
“He might be able to [get the deal done],” said McIlroy, per the Guardian. “He’s got Elon Musk, who I think is the smartest man in the world, beside him. We might be able to do something if we can get Musk involved, too.
“I think from the outside looking in, it’s probably a little less complicated than it actually is. But obviously Trump has a great relationship with Saudi Arabia. He’s got a great relationship with golf. He’s a lover of golf.
"So, maybe. Who knows? But I think as the president of the United States again, he’s probably got bigger things to focus on than golf.”
Some questionable statements in there to say the least, but maybe McIlroy is onto something. But if he genuinely believes Musk is ‘the smartest man in the world’, we’ll assume he’s not massively clued into the whole thing.
Still, FSG are certainly involved in some enormous dealings right now. As Liverpool’s owners, that will ultimately affect the Reds in some way - even if it’s just establishing their power in global sport.
