‘That is excellent’: Darwin Nunez earns ‘standing ovation’ from pundit

Darwin Nunez earned a ‘standing ovation’ from one pundit for his incredible goal vs Bournemouth.

Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney says Darwin Nunez earned a ‘standing ovation’ from him for his goal against Bournemouth. Nunez was starting his very first game under Arne Slot - and therefore his first of the season - and made it count.

Nunez essentially forced the goal himself, winning the ball back and ending up with it out on the right flank. He cut inside, leaving his defender for dead, before unleashing a beautiful left-footed curler into the far corner, in off the post.

It was fantastic and one that had Deeney singing his praises on Talksport after the game.

"I think that is excellent centre-forward play,” said Deeney. "He has all the attributes, he wins the ball down the line, he has no right to win that, he wins the flick-on into Salah.

"He then gets onto his own flick-on with Salah giving it to him back, he chops inside onto his weak foot.

"And then it's just about composing yourself, feel it, and he's just felt it with his left foot, post and in.

"And you can hear this place, he needed that, they needed that, what a goal, and that's why he got a standing ovation from me."

Darwin Nunez impresses

As Deeney says, Nunez ‘needed’ that. The Uruguayan has had an incredible number of critics over the last couple of years, even through periods of really good production.

But this was Nunez at his best. It’s a goal from nothing, produced purely from the striker’s desire to try improbable things and having the ability to pull them off.

If he can keep this up, Nunez will feature regularly throughout the season - and might just win his little battle with Diogo Jota for the starting striker role.
