Darwin Nunez REACTS on Instagram after social media hate

Darwin Nunez has had an up-and-down Liverpool career so far.

The tricky Uruguayan signed for the Reds in 2022 for £64 million from Benfica. He has produced some iconic moments for the team but overall, hasn’t really lived up to his price tag.

Fans have been critical of his performances throughout his time at the club, but now Darwin believes the abuse he has received has gone too far.

The Reds number 9 is the definition of a hit-or-miss footballer. He is incredibly frustrating to watch as some weeks he looks unstoppable and delivers some outstanding performances. But other times, he looks well off the pace and hardly makes an impact in the game.

This season, Nunez hasn’t been able to get a sniff into the starting XI. Arne Slot much prefers the consistency of Diogo Jota, with Darwin having to settle for substitution appearances.

It is fair to say that recently, he hasn’t been performing well. In last week’s disappointing defeat to Nottingham Forest, Nunez lost the ball high up the pitch which started a Forest counter-attack,  eventually leading to Callum Hudson-Odoi scoring for the visitors. This was the cherry on top of the cake.

As a result, Darwin unfairly received strong hatred on Instagram with many ‘fans’ leaving loathsome messages and comments under his photos.

Social media is a continuing issue for footballers, especially after a poor game. They seem to get constantly harassed and this is another clear example.

Therefore, the Uruguayan has now made his account private, meaning people who do not follow him on Instagram won’t be able to view his content. This has clearly been done to stop the wave of criticism he is receiving.

This unpleasant behaviour isn't only from opposition fans, but also from Reds supporters. This is not how our players should be treated. If we want them to succeed, we need to get behind them and support the individual in any situation.

Let’s hope this incident doesn’t deter Darwin and he can get back to the quality form we have seen from him before.
