Liverpool FC News: Danny Murphy makes title race statement after Reds slip-up

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has shared his thoughts on this season's Premier League title race, offering words of comfort to Reds supporters after Sunday's 2-2 draw with Manchester United. 

A wasteful Liverpool could only take a point away from Old Trafford at the weekend thanks to Mohamed Salah's late penalty, with Jurgen Klopp's side left kicking themselves after surrendering their position at the top of the table.

The result leaves the Reds second in the table, behind Arsenal on goal difference and just a point ahead of Manchester City with seven games to play.

Liverpool knew they could ill afford any slip-ups in a three-horse race, with Sunday's result ultimately feeling like a massive wasted opportunity given their dominance for much of the match.

However, Murphy believes that there are still plenty of twists and turns to come in the bid to be crowned champions, with the Reds still in a 'great position' heading into the final weeks of the season.

LIVERPOOL'S TITLE CHARGE FAR FROM OVER

Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day 2 on Sunday evening, Murphy stated: "It felt like a defeat [for Liverpool] because of the dominance and the amount of chances that they had. They had enough chances to win a couple of games, really.

"Sometimes when you play in a big game, you can feel comfortable when you’ve only got a point if you’ve played OK. Because they’ve played so well, that’s why it feels so bad. They were in control of the game.

"The key now is how you respond. It is disappointing but they’re only second on goal difference. There’s still some bumps on the road maybe yet for Arsenal and Man City, and there’s loads of big games coming up.

"They’re still in a great position; just put it to bed [and focus on] the next game now."

Arsenal and Man City are both on fantastic runs of form and don't look like dropping points between now and the end of the season, but both sides are still involved in the Champions League and will face one another in the final four should they progress from their respective quarter-finals.

Liverpool are also in action in the Europa League, although that is unlikely to place as significant a burden on their shoulders as the Champions League.

All three sides still have some tough matches to come, but it's Man City that boast the most straightforward fixture list from now until the end of the campaign.
