EXCLUSIVE: Diogo Jota among high-profile exits in era-defining overhaul

It harkens back to those olden days when in the late 1980s and 1990s, the two teams were doing the same with some iconic names and legendary stars.

One of the most infamous nights for Liverpool was losing the league title in 1989, thanks to a late winner from Arsenal, who clinched the trophy in a dramatic clash at Anfield.

The goal-scorer of that late goal was Michael Thomas, who etched himself into Arsenal folklore and became a club legend.

But as fate would have it, his allegiance would switch very soon after.

Michael Thomas now working for Liverpool and spotted at training ground

Two years later, Thomas would end up joining Liverpool and he would go onto score in the FA Cup final, becoming an iconic figure for the club.

In the end, he played as many years at Anfield (seven) as at Arsenal and since his playing career, Thomas has also continued to represent Liverpool's legend team.

Now 57 years old, the former England international was spotted at the AXA training centre watching Liverpool's U18 game against Manchester United alongside Kenny Dalglish.

Thomas' presence raised some eyebrows among fans, but it should not come as a surprise. He actually works for the club and has been working for the Reds since 2020, despite his affiliations to Arsenal and despite the Gunners being his boyhood club having grown up in Lambeth, London.

Since 2020, Thomas has been appointed as an academy mentor. Interestingly, he took the role alongside Jayden Danns' dad, Neil.

Thomas' focus is on the youth development stage at U13-U16 level. This is an important role helping to guide the club's future talents.

It's a role that ensures the players are aware of the steps they need to make to continue their development and help them achieve their goals of playing for the first team.

Thomas' presence therefore makes sense at the AXA training centre. He will have been watching some of the U16 talent who made the step-up to the U18s under his guidance.
