Despite injury issues, Alisson has maintained his position as the Reds’ number one shot stopper, fending off competition from Caoimhin Kelleher.

Since returning from injury in December Alisson’s performances have been met with some criticism, with the ‘keeper only keeping two Premier League clean sheets in his first eight games back.

The 32-year-old showed he was back to his best in Liverpool’s recent 2-0 victory over Bournemouth however, proving why he deserves his spot in Slot’s side.

Alisson’s injury problems

Over the last two seasons Alisson has missed 43 games through injury in all competitions, leading to opportunities for Kelleher and Vitezslav Jaros.

In both seasons Alisson has been struck by injury on more than one occasion, and this has led to some questioning the long-term feasibility of Alisson remaining Liverpool’s first choice.

The Reds also confirmed a deal last summer that will see Giorgi Mamardashvili join Slot’s side before the start of next season.

Mamardashvili could be a direct replacement for Kelleher as the Reds’ back-up, with the Irishman keen on a move away in search of guaranteed regular first-team football, but Mamardashvili could also be the long-term successor to Alisson at Anfield.

Even if Mamardashvili starts the season on Liverpool’s bench, Alisson’s injury history suggests that the Georgian will get a run in the team at some point.

Is Alisson still the best ‘keeper in the Premier League?

Alisson is a two-time Premier League Golden Glove winner, last winning the award in 2022, but the legendary shot stopper will have his sights set on a third Golden Glove this campaign.

A few crucial reaction saves against Bournemouth led to Alisson’s seventh league clean sheet of the season, putting him three behind league leader Matz Sels of Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool’s ‘keeper is joint fourth in the league for clean sheets, tied with Andre Onana and behind Jordan Pickford and David Raya.

Alisson however has kept a clean sheet in 46.7% of his league games this season, 5% better than Sels who is second in the metric.

If Ali can continue to put in performances like he did at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, he stands an excellent chance of capturing his third Golden Glove, and maybe his second Premier League too.
