Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has revealed he was called 'Gary' when he first arrived at Anfield, but prefers the nickname 'Macca'.

The World Cup winner has been a roaring success since his £35m summer transfer from Brighton, fast becoming a mainstay of Jurgen Klopp's midfield.

Mac Allister has impressed at the base of a new-look engine room lineup, despite initial concerns over his suitability in a holding role, while he has also shown off his more attacking qualities in big moments.

The No. 10, who has five goals and six assists in all competitions so far in 2023/24, has at least one goal contribution in each of his last four outings, including the cross he provided for Darwin Nunez's late winner against Nottingham Forest and the penalty equaliser against Manchester City.

Don't call him Gary

Earlier in the season, it was revealed that Mac Allister had been dubbed Klopp's son such is the manager's love of the versatile star.

"Many of my teammates tease me because they say that [Klopp] is my dad now. The relationship with him is perfect, he is a very charismatic person, who always tries to be close to the players," Mac Allister told Argentine press last year.

Now, the midfielder has now discussed the other nicknames he's been given by his teammates — one of which he was not so fond of.

"I prefer Macca," he told LFCTV.

"The thing is that, they never called me Macca before. It's just when I arrived here they started doing it.

"At the beginning it was Gary. I didn't like it. Yeah, Gary because of Gary McAllister and I said 'No, I don't like it', so they started saying Macca and I like it."

Elsewhere in the interview, Mac Allister revealed that Mo Salah made him change part of his pre-match routine.

"When I was at Brighton I used to wear trousers, and then I came here," he said.

"I remember against Sheffield United we went out to do the warm-up and I was wearing a hat and trousers and Mo told me 'What are you doing? Why would you wear that?'

"Since that day I have never worn trousers again. Only because of Mo."
