Liverpool fans pick their Jurgen Klopp successor - poll results

We asked Liverpool fans who they'd pick as their first-choice successor to Jurgen Klopp and 32,000 have responded. It's safe to say there's a preferred target.

As you might have seen, Jurgen Klopp is stepping down as Liverpool manager. The German announced his decision on Friday, triggering what will be an enormously important search for a successor.

Liverpool have made incredible strides under Klopp, after all, and won't want to go backwards under the new boss. At the same time, there's no one available who's really on his level - the Reds will have to take a chance on someone.

We've asked fans on Twitter who they should take that chance on and you've responded in your thousands. Over 32k voted in a poll that didn't even last 24 hours.

And the results show an overwhelmingly clear favourite.

The options here were Bayer Leverkusen manager (and former Liverpool midfielder) Xabi Alonso, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, Sporting's Ruben Amorim or simply anyone else.

Four options then - but one winner. Over 89 per cent of you voted for Alonso to be the next Liverpool boss, suggesting this is a one-horse race as far as fans are concerned. De Zerbi, a distant second place, earned just 6.8 per cent of the vote.

It makes complete sense, of course. Alonso is working wonders at Leverkusen, taking them to the top of the Bundesliga, undefeated and four points ahead of Bayern Munich.

And that's despite not having anywhere near the pull or the resources of Bayern. We'll see if he can get them over the line - Leverkusen don't exactly have the greatest history in that regard.

But Alonso is, of course, someone who knows Liverpool football club. He spent four years with the Reds at the start of his career, blossoming into one of the best midfielders on the planet.

He's someone who's won everything in the game as a player, working under some of the greatest managers in history, and is now showing he's capable of challenging in a top European league while the boss. No wonder he's Liverpool fans' first choice.
