Liverpool fans FURIOUS with VAR as Premier League forced to respond
Despite winning against Leicester City in a relatively comfortable fashion, Liverpool fans were furious with the referee and VAR during the game.
Reds fans and players were frustrated with Leicester’s time wasting in a first half that saw only two minutes added on at the end of the 45 minutes.

That was despite Jordan Ayew and Patson Daka both spending a long time on the floor after challenges from Liverpool players and consistent time wasting by goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk at goal kicks.
Referee Darren Bond was booed off the pitch at half time after what Liverpool fans thought was a poor performance from him amid a frustrating performance from Arne Slot’s side.
That frustration only grew in the second half of the game as a number of lengthy VAR checks were employed by the refereeing team after Liverpool put the ball in the back of Leicester’s net.
The first check came after Curtis Jones put Liverpool into the lead early in the second half, with VAR taking an age to confirm the goal, seemingly going through every moment in the buildup to the goal in search of an offside or handball that would have ruled the goal out.
Eventually, they concluded that the goal could stand and Jones and the fans celebrated after a long wait.
The same situation occurred later in the half after Cody Gakpo scored what would have been his second goal.
This one was eventually ruled out for an offside by Darwin Nunez in the build up, but again caused frustration for everyone watching after the VAR officials took a long time to come to their decision.
While both decisions were correct, the amount of time it took for each one to be made caused huge frustration in the ground and for viewers at home as well.
A number of Liverpool fans were furious, with Olympic gold medallist and former England hockey player Sam Quek posting on X: “What happened to ‘clear and obvious’? This is absolutely mental.”
Premier League responds to VAR decisions
The official Premier League Match Centre account on X shared two statements following each of the decisions, clarifying the eventual decisions reached by each VAR check.
However, there was no mention of the time it took for either decision to be made in the posts released by the Premier League.
It is customary for the Premier League to release statements like this following VAR checks in games this season, but fans across the board would surely appreciate explanations as to why the checks have to take so long.
It led to nine added minutes in the second half, and with players having to stand around in the cold while the checks are made, it could lead to muscle injuries as they cool down while waiting.
Another sign that VAR needs fixing.
