Cody Gakpo was subject to a trip from Lewis Cook in the box and fans have been rampant in their claims that Liverpool should not have been awarded the call.

After Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly was incorrectly dismissed with a red card in their winning visit to Wolves last week, tensions in the title race have been turned up a notch.

Conspiracy against Arsenal?

Screenshots of the foul on Gakpo by Cook have been floating around on social media, with claims suggesting that the Dutchman tripped himself.

However, a full clip of the incident quickly clarifies that Gakpo is indeed tripped and the referee undoubtedly made the right call.

But fans are having none of it, as the referees' 'agenda' for Liverpool to win the league continues to prevail.

Arsenal fan RoryTalksFootball was quick to claim that Liverpool should not have been awarded a penalty because of one angle he's seen on the internet.

Likewise, another Arsenal fan felt the need to compare the Gakpo incident with a situation that involved Arsenal last season, claiming that because they look similar they should result in identical outcomes. Sadly, that isn't how football works. No challenge is ever identical to another.

Of course, in a high-stakes title race, small margins matter and it is clear that there have been a few occasions where Arsenal have been unfortunate with refereeing calls. Liverpool certainly know how that feels - they had a similar season in the last campaign.

But at no point have the frustrations towards a decision resulted in fans sending death threats to a referee, as had reportedly happened last weekend between Arsenal fans and Michael Oliver.

This game against Bournemouth was the first time that referee Darren England had been allowed to officiate a Liverpool game since the incorrect Luis Diaz offside call against Tottenham last season, which VAR had checked and gave a wrong decision in the process.

Even then, Liverpool fans' frustrations never boiled over to anything severe, just mass rage and anger spread on social media amongst community groups.

But through England giving the Gakpo penalty today, fans seem to have forgotten why we haven't seen him involved in Liverpool games, with one claiming that he might in fact be a closet Liverpool fan. Like, seriously?

Nonetheless, regardless of the reaction from rival fans online, Liverpool were deservedly awarded a penalty for a foul in the box and the Reds successfully managed to end Bournemouth's 12-game unbeaten run in the process.

The club may receive some fortunate officiating calls from time to time, as all teams do across the season - things largely level themselves out - but you will never be able to convince some people when their agenda is so deeply believed.
