Fabrizio Romano confirms SURPRISE plans for Liverpool youngster

Liverpool are set to be ruthless this summer, an approach that fans of the club have been desperate to see for many years now.

Under the ownership of FSG, the Reds have always been rational in their thinking, sometimes to the detriment of themselves by missing out on opportunities because they kept the purse strings closed tight.

But at the heart of the strategy was keeping the club well run, making sure to not get into any financial difficulty with the regulations while protecting the self-sustaining and self-sufficient model.

However, this summer it is clear that drastic action is needed in certain areas of the pitch. Positions such as left-back and centre-back haven't been invested in for years, and the options at striker have proved beyond all reasonable doubt that they aren't up to the task.

As such, a more brutal style of decision-making is being adopted. A hefty budget is being thrown at a rebuild, but players sitting on the periphery might also be sacrificed to build up cash-flow.

By conducting such a cut-throat assessment of the team, we will occasionally receive news like this update from Fabrizio Romano about players that we previously thought were untouchable.

Liverpool youngster could be axed six months after new contract

The player in question is 22-year-old defender Jarell Quansah, a homegrown academy talent who only made his foray into the Red's senior first-team last year having received his debut from Jurgen Klopp.

Since, the start of the season, it has been clear that new manager Arne Slot does not fancy him as much as some of the other players in his position, with Ibrahima Konate partnering Virgil Van Dijk for most of the campaign so far.

This is despite the impressive form saw from the youngster last season when he was backed and given a real opportunity to start regularly in games to showcase what he's capable of.

The lack of minutes in this campaign have meant that his confidence is shot, which has subsequently led to him making mistakes when he eventually is shoe-horned into the side.

While he might have learnt a lot from this year, he is development can only really have taken a backstep.

As a result, the latest update on the player from Fabrizio Romano on his Here We Go podcast should not come as a surprise.

He said: "I would keep an eye on Jarell Quansah because he's very good and very talented, but at the same time, sometimes, you want to play.

"You have Virgil Van Dijk extending his contract, [Ibrahima] Konate is still there, the interest in [Dean] Huijsen], and [the fact that] Liverpool have many players in that position.

"It's true that injuries are part of the game, we have many games as always in modern football, but Jarell Quansah is attracting interest from several clubs - Newcastle, from what I'm hearing, but also German clubs in the Bundesliga.

"I'm told there could be movement, he could be one of the players for Liverpool to consider to cash in on if the player wants to go and try something new."

Of course, the centre-back only signed a new contract with Liverpool in October 2024, so the likelihood that he will leave should in theory be quite low.

But Slot's dismissal of the player could have lasting damage and over the summer, the Englishman's mind might wander.

If it does, then it would be a disaster given the Reds need to bring in at least one new centre-back before any players consider leaving, so the recruitment team's workload would only get worse.

Liverpool fans have been highly critical of the lack of rotation and Slot's stubbornness to play the same players, sometimes in spite of poor performances, so in their eyes Quansah should have been given more of a go this season, but we'll have to wait and see if he starts the next season with a point to prove.
