It was going to be the most perfect ending to the last ever Merseyside derby for the Reds. Mohamed Salah had dominated against Everton and his goal and assists were going to take Liverpool nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

But then, out of nowhere, like a thunder strike, James Tarkowski scored probably the best goal of his entire career.

Everton celebrated as if they had won the league title. In the dying embers, they snatched a victory away from the Reds.

Liverpool though were right to be furious. In the lead up to the goal, there were several referee mishaps and even a very subjective rule that cost the Reds.

The insane rule that cost Liverpool the game against Everton

It is arguable Mohamed Salah was fouled as Liverpool went on the attack in the lead up to the goal but Michael Oliver waved on.

Then, as Ibrahima Konate went to head the cross that would ultimately see Tarkowski score, there was a clear push on him which meant he missed the header.

None of these things were recognised by VAR nor Michael Oliver. Instead, the VAR reviewed a potential Everton offside in the lead-up to the goal.

For many Liverpool observers, the Everton player looked offside, and new images show just how close the decision was.

As the Twitter account above highlights, Doucoure was technically offside in the build-up to Everton's equaliser. You can see from the new images they put together how he is ahead of Van Dijk.

However, the PGMOL have introduced a built-in tolerance level, making the offside lines thicker in order to give the benefit of the doubt to the attacker in 2021.

This rule that they introduced is ultimately what cost Liverpool the game and the Reds have every right to be annoyed and angry about the decision.

By the letter of the game, Doucoure was offside but by PGMOL's own laws, he was not.

This essentially means that the PGMOL have insanely made something that should very much be an objective decision, a subjective matter.
