Liverpool and Everton gang up on Arsenal in Premier League title race

Everton and Liverpool joined together in an attempt to move the Merseyside derby at Anfield forward from Wednesday April 2 to Tuesday April 1.

Arsenal remain the Reds’ main competition in the Premier League title race, currently 12 points behind. They are set to play on Tuesday April 1 against Fulham and could find themselves just nine points away from the league leaders before the derby kicks off on the Wednesday.

Liverpool are yet to face the Gunners at Anfield this season, which takes place on May 10, and they will be hoping to have the title wrapped up by then.

Everton would not just be doing Liverpool a favour, they will also benefit from the fixture change, as Arteta’s men head to Goodison Park for a 12:30pm kick-off the following Saturday.

Will the Merseyside derby be rearranged?

The move would give the Toffees extra recovery time to prepare before facing the North London team, in the hope that this could lead to a precious victory for them in the fixture.

An Everton win would strangely be celebrated by both sides of Merseyside as holding Arsenal at bay would bring Slot’s men one step closer to lifting the trophy.

However, the Premier League have rejected the plea according to the Daily Mail, giving a boost to Arsenal. The original date means neither club would be forced to play another match within 60 hours, so the request fell on deaf ears.

The decision won’t go down well, especially at Goodison Park, where there are already regular boos for the competition after their points deduction, but it was an unlikely team up between the two Merseyside teams in an attempt to both gain an advantage.

Liverpool approach the derby with their 12-point advantage but suffered consecutive losses before the international break, which Arsenal will be hoping will play on their minds the rest of the season.
