Liverpool are monitoring the development of Schalke 04 starlet Assan Ouedraogo, according to one journalist.

Despite completing a much-discussed midfield rebuild this summer, the Reds could be in the market for more engine room additions.

Sky Sport DE reporter Florian Plettenberg claims that Liverpool are among the clubs 'monitoring the development' of rising talent Ouedraogo.

The 17-year-old midfielder apparently has a release clause that can be activated from 2024, where he can be signed by clubs from outside Germany for €20m (£17m), and is attracting attention from Everton and Brighton, as well as Jurgen Klopp's side.

However, Plettenberg claims the most 'concrete' interest currently is coming from AC Milan.

It is reported that Milan officials want to meet with Schalke this week, while Ouedraogo was on the Italian club's wish list this summer.

A Germany youth international whose father was a Burkina Faso international, Ouedraogo has been making waves after breaking into the Schalke first team this season.

Described a playing 'a bit like Xabi Alonso and Michael Essien' by the Bundesliga's own website, the young central midfielder was part of the Germany team that won the Under-17 European Championship in 2023, scoring the winning penalty in the final against France.

Ouedraogo also became Schalke's youngest ever goalscorer when he netted on his debut in the 2. Bundesliga defeat to Hamburger SV earlier this season, breaking a record previously set by Julian Draxler.

Reports in Germany have previously claimed that Bayern Munich are also interested in the wonderkid, while Chelsea and Manchester City too have been mentioned.

Meanwhile, Anfield Watch understands that Liverpool are interested in strengthening their midfield further in 2024, with Fluminense's Andre Trindade still a target.

The Reds will have priority on the 22-year-old over other suitors, if they choose to make a move when the transfer window re-opens in January.
