Liverpool forward Diogo Jota called up by Portugal for Euro 2024

Liverpool striker Diogo Jota has been included in the Portugal squad for the upcoming European Championship despite recent injury trouble. 

Jota, 27, was on the bench for the final Premier League game of the season as Jurgen Klopp brought the curtain down on his Anfield reign with a home win against Wolves. 

However, the versatile forward had missed the previous four league matches for the Reds, suffering a hip problem during the game against Fulham at Craven Cottage in April, where he scored. 

Jota only made his comeback from a knee ligament injury suffered against Brentford in February during the recent Europa League last-16 first-leg defeat to Atalanta. 

However, following two substitute appearances in the two legs against the Italians, an appearance from the bench against Crystal Palace and his only start of the sequence against the Cottagers, his season was effectively over. 

Due to his extensive injury problems, Jota only managed 14 Premier League starts for Liverpool this season, scoring 10 goals in 21 league appearances overall. 

Liverpool have dearly missed Jota's goalscoring contributions this season as other forwards like Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz struggle.

His injury trouble led to discussions whether Roberto Martinez would call up the former Wolves man to his squad for the Euros, talk that was put to bed on Tuesday afternoon with Martinez’s announcement of the 26 names that would be heading to Germany. 

Neto and Inacio also included for Portugal

Jota also missed the recent international friendlies against Sweden and Slovenia, but made seven appearances during the qualification phase, scoring twice. 

In total he has played 36 times for his country, scoring 12 goals.

The forward suffered heartbreak on the eve of the 2022 World Cup, being ruled out of the tournament with a calf injury. 

Portugal face Turkey, Czechia and Georgia during the group stages of Euro 2024 and will be led by the familiar face of Cristiano Ronaldo. 

Other call-ups include reported Liverpool transfer targets Pedro Neto (Wolves) and Goncalo Inacio (Sporting CP).
