Liverpool have known for quite some time that the forward line needs to be refreshed but today it became all the more obvious.

Mohamed Salah has 32 goals and 22 assists to his name this season, meanwhile the other forwards are nowhere near his level.

As such, when the Egyptian doesn't provide a goal contribution, the frailties of his teammates are laid bare for all to see.

Today, in the Carabao Cup final, Diogo Jota showed that he simply hasn't got what it takes to play for Liverpool anymore, delivering a 57 minute performance of nothing.

Arne Slot's reaction said it all with the Dutchman deciding to hook the Portuguese forward off first for the second time in a row - after doing the same thing against Paris Saint Germain midweek.

Jota is a player lost at sea - we have to let him go

Across 28 games, the Portuguese international has eight goals and three assists to his name, and while he has been injured for a fair part of the season, that return simply isn't good enough for a striker at Liverpool.

This week specifically was monumental for Liverpool's season - a chance to build on a 1-0 lead of PSG in the Champions League and an opportunity to retain the Carabao Cup final.

Yet Jota has been missing throughout, producing no shots on target in either leg against the French champions and or today in a major final at Wembley.

That's three starts, 197 minutes and no goalkeeper has been even remotely challenged. To make matters worse, he's not even delivering the basic workloads either; today he's had four accurate passes, 1/4 ground duels won and 1/1 aerial duels won, but no dribbles, no long-balls, no defensive breakthroughs.

The criticism that has come Darwin Nunez's way has been enormous, with fans slandering him for missing countless chances, but at least he's got passion and drive, always trying to the dying moments.

In truth, neither are good enough for this club. They've been inconsistent throughout their careers at the Reds and most recently, they've been non-existent, and that is never okay.

Anfield Watch understands that both Jota and Nunez are just some of the players likely to be assessed when the season comes to an end, with forward recruits looking likely to come through the door in the summer - one of which was Newcastle's Alexander Isak, who scored the Magpies' second goal in their defeat of Liverpool.

But while Liverpool fans have been content with making use of the players available and reconsidering their places at the club in a few months time, it feels like as if those next few months will be more of a struggle than we might've originally imagined.

The objective is clear, win as many of the remaining Premier League games as possible, by any means, to secure the title and then look to the transfer market to make sure we are in a much more solid position next time around.
