Across a long and busy season, injuries in a team are inevitable.

Unfortunately for Liverpool however, they all seem to be happening to defenders.

Not only is Ibrahima Konate sidelined at centreback, but Kostas Tsimikas and Conor Bradley on each flank are also missing due to injury, fatigue and fitness.

This all comes after Alisson Becker was injured for two months, so Liverpool's backup goalkeeper Coaimhin Kelleher had to step in, and Trent Alexander-Arnold managed to return from injury just as Bradley needed to be replaced.

Given the number of games the players have had, the toll on their bodies was always going to have an impact eventually, but the task ahead of Arne Slot to keep Liverpool's good form going is only set to get harder.

However, for one of Liverpool's loanees at the moment, the ongoing injury hardship may be just about to end.

Luke Chambers set to return for Wigan

In order for academy players to be given the necessary experience and development they need to make a successful adjustment to the pressures of senior men's football at Liverpool, the club will loan them out to clubs playing at a slightly lower level.

For 20-year-old left-back Luke Chambers, he was given the opportunity to play in League One at Wigan Athletic, as a way to improve his fitness and receive regular minutes on the pitch.

At first, he was in and out of the side, but after a standout 4-0 win over Bristol Rovers in September, a game where he notched his maiden goal for the club, he was played on an increasingly regular basis.

Across six consecutive league games, he helped the Latics record six straight clean sheets. The defence he was part of became impenetrable.

However, following the team's win draw against Stockport County at the start of October, Chambers developed a back injury which has kept him sidelined ever since.

Wigan has noticeably fallen down the table to 16th place, and Chambers has been working tirelessly to return to full fitness.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Chambers captioned a picture of him with his Latics teammates using an hourglass timer and a charged battery emoji, symbolising a potential return from injury, as the time before he returns is running out and he is full of energy following his spell off the pitch.

It is hoped that Liverpool's first-team absentees will publish a social media post in a similar fashion soon so that Arne Slot will once again have a full array of players to choose from as the team attempts to win silverware this season.

But until then, the Reds will have to make do with the personnel available, while those injured are busy in their recovery.
