Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Real Sociedad star Takefusa Kubo after the Japan international penned a new deal with the La Liga side on Monday.

The Reds had been linked with a move for the 22-year-old after some impressive performances for Sociedad, the winger having netted six goals and provided four assists in 27 appearances this season.

Reports had suggested that Liverpool had already made contact with Kubo over a potential move to Merseyside, with the former Real Madrid man boasting a £51m release clause in his previous contract.

However, the pursuit of Takefusa Kubo now looks more complicated as the summer approaches after the attacker signed a new deal until 2029 at the Reale Arena.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano was one of the first to announce Kubo's contract extension, stating on X: "Take Kubo signs new long-term deal at Real Sociedad valid until June 2029.

"Crucial move for the club as Kubo was already attracting interest for the summer, new contract sealed."

Liverpool may have been one of the number of clubs interested in signing Kubo in the next transfer window, although the Reds will need to appoint a new sporting director and line up Jurgen Klopp's successor before pursuing targets.

Kubo, who usually features on the right-wing, would be a fantastic addition to a Liverpool squad already bursting with attacking talent, offering the Reds a handy alternative to Mohamed Salah.

However, by extending his contract with Sociedad, Kubo will have undoubtedly raised his price tag should he choose to leave the club this summer.

The forward, who was described as a "world-class player" by Barcelona manager Xavi earlier this season, has 28 goal contributions in 71 games for the Spanish side.
