Premier League legend SLAMS Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez over finishing

Darwin Nunez had a weekend to forget for Liverpool, starting the Anfield clash against Tottenham on the bench before an ineffective cameo late on.

In the aftermath of the Premier League encounter, which finished 4-2 to the Reds, Nunez was subjected to severe and unwarranted social media abuse, leading to the 24-year-old to delete all mentions of Liverpool from his Instagram profile

Nunez has suffered a poor run of form, without a goal to his name in his last SIX Premier League outings, and his long-term prospects on Merseyside have come under recent scrutiny.

It’s been suggested that Barcelona will move for the ex-Benfica man if they manage to offload Robert Lewandowski - probably to Saudi Arabia - with the Catalans reportedly having had contact with Nunez’s representatives over a summer move.

And following the Spurs game, the issue of Nunez’s finishing again cropped up. Michael Owen’s criticisms in the wake of Nunez’s brilliant goal against Brentford have resurfaced with ANOTHER example of inefficient finishing now being discussed.

Defoe: Liverpool will fall behind with Darwin up front

Jermain Defoe, ninth on the list of all-time Premier League goalscorers, took aim at the £85 million signing, suggesting that if he continued to try to score in the manner he currently does, then Liverpool will never be able to consistently challenge for the title.

“I think Jota is probably the best finisher,” Defoe told Premier League Productions. “He actually finishes, like calculated finishes. Salah and Nunez, they shoot if that makes sense. They don’t finish.

“Even Nunez, in the last action when he went through on goal, the obvious solution was to go around the goalkeeper and then pass it into an empty net. But, for whatever reason, he tries to dink it over him. It’s the wrong thing to do in that situation.

"The chances, when it comes consistently, like week after week and game after game and you are missing all these chances, then you are competing against teams like Man City and Arsenal that get these chances and players are converting these chances. Then you are going to fall behind.”
