Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard makes OUTRAGEOUS FA demand
It’s a cliche but it is true that every football fan dreams of scoring on their debut for their country.
Throw that in with a man of the match performance, having forced your way into the starting XI for your club as they top the Premier League and Champions League, and the birth of your first child all within the space of a month, there’s a chance life couldn’t get much better.

But that’s exactly what is happening for Curtis Jones right now. He capped off an outstanding England debut performance against Greece in the UEFA Nations League performance with a cheeky flicked backheel goal to make it 3-0 in the 84th minute.
And this came alongside a game-high 96% pass accuracy, seven recoveries and seven duels won, leaving him with a match-leading 8.5 rating on FotMob.
Understandably, the football world was quick to heap praise on the Liverpool man for his showing.
"Curtis is an outstanding player," England’s interim manager Lee Carsley told ITV, "I thought he played really well today, even without his goal it was an excellent performance.”
Phil McNulty, the BBC’s chief football writer, said that there was a “rare audacity” about the manner in which Jones dispatched his goal on the night.
Gerrard calls for FA to be fined over Jones
But perhaps the highest praise came from all-time Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who shared a picture of Jones on his Instagram story with the caption, “What a player *red heart emoji* Fine the FA and coaches for being late red heart emojI*”.
Gerrard and Jones have a pre-established relationship from Gerrard’s days coaching Liverpool’s youth team, with Jones going on the record to admit how much he idolises the midfield icon.
In discussing the performance himself, Jones cut his usual modest figure, telling ITV "The lads around helped as well. I just went out there, I was playing free, I had a smile on my face, I was enjoying it and I'm happy that I came away with a goal as well."
Gerrard is obviously correct to suggest that Jones’s debut cap comes much later than it should have. However, it may have just come at the perfect time.
Jones is in the form of his life right now and has become an undeniable midfield presence, first for his club and now for his country.
Between the controversial England squad withdrawals and Jones justifying his inclusion, Lee Carsley may have just left incoming England manager Thomas Tuchel an unexpected gift.
